Causes 

Gonorrhea results from an infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a type of bacterium. It is known to affect the reproductive tract only, but can also cause infections in the various mucous membranes like rectum, eyes, throat, and mouth.

Transmission of the disease is possible through sexual contact with an infected person. It will often involve the mouth, anus, vagina, or penis. Ejaculation in men is not necessary for acquiring gonorrhea.

An infected mother could also transmit the disease to its offspring during delivery.

All sexually active individuals are susceptible to acquiring gonorrhea; however, the incidences are higher in African-Americans, young adults, and teenagers.
